Waterpoort

The Waterpoort is the only remaining city gate of Zaltbommel and the starting point of all walking routes. In the first half of the fourteenth century, the city's defenses were constructed, consisting of a city wall and a moat. Bommel once had five city gates: the Gamerschepoort, the Bosschepoort, the Oenselsepoort, the Steigerpoort and the Waterpoort. The Waterpoort is the only one that has survived the centuries. In 1942 and 1943 the gate was restored and given its current appearance, without a plaster layer. From the water, where the Hanseatic ships moored, the gate is almost invisible. It was part of a larger complex, many components of which were demolished over time. The fact that the gate was preserved may be related to the houses that were built against the inside of the gate and were in use.
