Zaltbommel had a thriving Jewish community in the Middle Ages and the early modern period. On the site of the former synagogue and the mikveh — the ritual bath — the history of this community can still be felt. The Jewish inhabitants of Zaltbommel played an active role in trade and urban life. The site is a reminder of a community that was deeply connected to the city, but also of the persecutions it had to endure throughout the centuries.
