Near the former Gamerschepoort there was once the mill of Marycken, one of several mills that supplied the Hanseatic city of Zaltbommel with energy. The mill was named after a woman called Marycken, indicating female land ownership or entrepreneurship in the medieval city. The Gamerschepoort was one of the city gates that guarded access to Zaltbommel. The site is a reminder of both the industrial and defensive infrastructure of the flourishing Hanseatic city.
