At the intersection of the Gamerschestraat, the Steenweg, the Singelwal and the Molenwal, the Gamerschepoort stood for centuries. This was an imposing gatehouse with an outer gate and a main gate, with a curved passageway so that cannonballs that accidentally came through the gate were deflected. In 1584, Marycken the miller's wife requested permission to place her mill beyond this gate. Due to the increase in traffic and because of its dilapidated condition, the city decided to demolish it in 1829.
