At Kerkstraat 25 there is a special detail that surprises many a passer-by: the "Gootspook". Gootspoken are decorative figures that were attached to medieval buildings to drain rainwater. They often had grotesque or animal forms and served at the same time as apotropaic images meant to keep evil at bay. The gargoyle at the Kerkstraat is a unique and charming remnant of the medieval visual culture of Zaltbommel.
